Abstract

The Flag of the Union ranks among the important and influential newspapers of Alabama. A fortunate combination of proper timing, strategic geographical location, and able and forthright editors made this possible.

It existed as a separate entity only eleven years, but in this period Alabama was developing the patterns of both its government and it politics. Before it lost its identity through merging with other papers it had been a big factor in establishing Andrew Jackson’s party and principles as permanent fixtures in the state. And after these mergers its influence continued through the Montgomery Advertiser and the Tuscaloosa News, both of which inherited policies and prestige from the Flag.
