Abstract

This study, the first detailed and systematic investigation of the Ostracoda of late Cretaceous age in Alabama, results in the identification of thirty-six species of ostracods, including one new genus and five new species, from the type locality of the Bluffport Marl Member of the Demopolis Formation in Sumter County, Alabama. The genus Cytheromorpha is reported from the Cretaceous for the first time. Samples from the Bluffport at localities other than the type locality indicate no significant faunal difference from that of the type locality. There appears to be no difference between ostracod faunas of the Bluffport Member and the Demopolis (restricted). Veenia ozanana (Israelsky) was used by this writer as a guide to the Bluffport Member because it was not found higher than this horizon in Alabama.
