Abstract
The Circus is an attempt to write a poem on two levels, the personal and the racial. On the personal level it deals with a normally intelligent man's experience during the two-and-a-half hour length of a circus performance. On the racial level it tries, through symbolism, to make the individual's adventures at the circus (a world in miniature) significant for the racial experience.
