Abstract
Description
Many place names in Minnesota derive from the Chippewa (Ojibwe) language. The Chippewa name for the Long Prairie River is Ga-shagoshkodeia-zibi. This name was interpreted as "Long-narrow-Prairie river” by J. A. Gilfillan, missionary to the Chippewa (Ojibwe) Indians. The City of Long Prairie borrows its name from the river. The name Long Prairie is a window to central Minnesota’s history, going back hundreds of years.
