The illustration first appeared in PNLA Quarterly (vol. 72, no. 4, 2008), in an article with the title “Interior Decorating Offers a Way to Connect with Patrons” by John H. Sandy. The article surveyed sixty libraries. The article included interviews with the head librarians at Baylor University, University of Texas at El Paso, University of Alaska Fairbanks, Boise Public Library, Missouri State University, Thomas Branigan Memorial Library in Las Cruces, New Mexico, Fletcher Free Library in Burlington, Vermont, Muskingum County Library System in Zanesville, Ohio, and the Asheville-Buncombe Public Library System in Asheville, No. Carolina.
