The tension in the discussion of the question of slavery extension reached its culmination with the election of the sixteenth president of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, upon a platform that distinctly declared against the further introduction or slavery into the territories in direct antagonism to the decision of the Supreme Court or the United States in the famous Dred Scott case. His election gave the signal for the secession movement in the Southern States.en_US
