Abstract

A growing body of research has exposed the negative impact of obesity-related stigma and biases on obese persons within healthcare. Inspired by this research, numerous attempts have been made to develop strategies to reduce implicit and explicit biases against obese persons from healthcare professionals. However, most of the studies around those well-meaning interventions reveal a disappointing reality; stigma and biases run deep, and they are hard to dismantle. Many studies focus on either the experience of obese persons in healthcare, or the beliefs and feelings of healthcare providers, including student nurses. The gatekeeper between those two groups are the nurse educators who prepare nursing students to care for obese persons. Little has been researched about their beliefs and their pedagogical practices related to obesity. Meanwhile, nurses are obese at higher rates than the general population, and bariatric surgery statistics are on the rise. This study focused on the experiences of nurse educators who have undergone bariatric surgery, seeking to reveal a better understanding of the complicated discourses impacting nursing pedagogy in our society today. Post-structuralism and Foucauldian concepts were used to explore those discourses surrounding obesity and biopower. This is a conventional qualitative study, using one-on-one interviews conducted via Zoom® . Six undergraduate nursing educators from the southeastern United States shared their stories of obesity, transformation following bariatric surgery, and how those experiences impacted them, and inform their current nursing pedagogy related to obesity. Their shared insight, stories and recommendations reveal what they propose needs to change in nursing curriculum to improve nursing care for obese clients.
