Appleton field is situated across two northwest-southeast trending, pre-Mesozoic "basement" highs near the updip limit of the Smackover Formation in the northern portion of the Conecuh embayment. Smackover deposition at Appleton field was influenced by both pre-Smackover paleotopography and variations in sea level.
