Abstract

The marriage at Augusta in 1809 of Sarah Minge Walker and George Walton united two of Georgia's prominent post-Revolutionary families.

The eighteen year old bride was a descendant through her mother, Elizabeth Talbot Walker, of the English earls of Shrewsbury. Her great-grandfather, John Talbot, before moving from Virginia to Georgia in 1783, had been for twenty-five sessions a member of the House of Burgesses and had signed the Williamsburg Declaration of Independence. After settling in Georgia, he had served for several years in the state legislature. Her father, George Walker, also an immigrant from Virginia, was a prominent lawyer and jurist of Augusta.
