Abstract:
In this project, I use a multi-theoretical approach to study the collective works of Science Fiction writer Octavia E. Butler. I situate Butler's twelve novels and nine short stories within studies of spirituality and migration, literacy and African American speech practices, race studies, and religion and social justice to examine how the entirety of Butler's writings speaks to the larger African American struggle. Unfortunately, the piecemeal way that scholars have approached Butler's works-one or two at a time-has not allowed us the room to contemplate how she significantly contributes to studies in African American literature and culture. Therefore, my project uses Butler's literary corpus to study the many opportunities that African Americans have to heal from historical and present-day forms of injustice. In essence, I argue that healing is not a linear process but takes place in multiple forms, such as through culture, familial ties, language practices, spirituality, body awareness, and activism. Additionally, my attention to Butler's body of works fills the gap between African American literature and Science Fiction by aiding in creating more imaginative approaches to literature and culture.
