Abstract

This manuscript provides a context for a recital given on February 19, 2017 containing three significant works for solo trombone written by contemporary Dutch composers: Jan Koetsier, Johan de Meij, and Jacob Ter Veldhuis. The program of the performance is included as Appendix I. The manuscript focuses on the technical challenges of performing each work as well as the pedagogical value of the pieces. In determining pedagogical value, comparisons are made between excerpts of the recital repertoire and well-known etudes and exercises that test similar areas of trombone performance technique. Additionally, biographies of the composers and trombonist Jörgen van Rijen are included in Appendix II.
