DaVinci is an opera about the life of Leonardo da Vinci as told through four different characters, each representing a specific aspect of daVinci's personality. Bambino is the young dreamer, a boy of 8-10 years of age, curious and unsure of himself. Mona Lisa represents the artistic side of daVinci, a painter whose art, although great, was often left unfinished. The prototypical stereotype "da Vinci," is an older man with a beard, an inventor or scientist, always looking to improve the world. The Military Elitist, athletic and handsome, represents da Vinci's practical side by designing weapons as a way of earning a living. The personification of each of these character traits and their dramatic interaction in the opera leads the audience to a better understanding of the complex nature of da Vinci's behavior throughout the span of his life. The thesis includes the entire libretto, and music for the first four scenes which are about 30 minutes in length. Pitch materials throughout are unified by a reliance on (0,1,6) and (0,1,5) trichords, and on pitch classes A and G-sharp in particular which assume fundamental roles in the overall structure; however, musical styles vary considerably from section to section as the plot unfolds, supporting the succession and juxtaposition of different personalities in the drama. As the operatic representation of such a varied personality is highly problematic, one primary goal of the work is to present different characters in such a way that the audience comes to realize, gradually but decisively, that they all represent different components in a single psyche, namely the psyche of Leonardo da Vinci. DaVinci is written with the college voice and operatic program in mind so that production costs will be minimal and vocal requirements are not too demanding.
