Item Motives for getting tattooed and the connections to well-being among tattoo recipients(2026) Perrotte, Jessica K.; Lynn, Christopher D.; Kelmelis, Saige; Shattuck, Eric C.Tattooing is a globally practiced and increasingly prevalent form of body art, serving diverse psychological functions. This study aimed to quantitatively operationalize motives for getting tattooed, investigate their associations with demographic factors (age, gender, socioeconomic status [SES]) and two indices of well-being (body satisfaction, perceived mental health), and explore how these associations differed by demographic characteristics. Participants included 271 adults (64.5% women; mean age = 32.2 years) recruited from tattoo shops in South Dakota, who completed a survey prior to receiving a tattoo. Analyses showed that women and younger individuals were more likely to endorse self-expression motives, while higher education was associated with memorializing life events and inversely associated with rebellion. Moderation analyses showed that younger patrons motivated by conformity reported poorer mental health, and those with lower SES endorsing affect regulation motives experienced poorer mental health and body satisfaction. Conversely, endorsing rebellion motives was associated with higher body satisfaction, particularly among younger patrons. These findings suggest that receiving tattoos act as a form of embodied coping, identity construction, and meaning-making that intersects with broader patterns of mental health and well-being, particularly among younger individuals and those of lower SES.Item Book Review of Flowers, by Irving Penn(1980-12-01) Sandy, John H.This book contains color photographs of seven common flowers: the poppy, tulip, rose, lily, peony, orchid, and begonia.
