Texas A&M University College Station; Texas Tech University System; Texas Tech University; Vanderbilt University; University of Virginia; Wayne State University; University of Wisconsin System; University of Wisconsin MadisonMeasurements are presented of associated production of a \(W\) boson and a charm quark ( \(W+c\) ) in proton–proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 \(\phantom{\rule{0.166667em}{0ex}}\text{Te}\phantom{\rule{0.333333em}{0ex}}\). The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.7 \(\phantom{\rule{0.166667em}{0ex}}{\text{fb}}^{-1}\) collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC. The \(W\) bosons are identified by their decay into a muon and a neutrino. The charm quarks are tagged via the full reconstruction of \({D}^{\ast }{\left(2010\right)}^{±}\) mesons that decay via \({D}^{\ast }{\left(2010\right)}^{±}\to {D}^{0}+{\pi }^{±}\to {K}^{\mp }+{\pi }^{±}+{\pi }^{±}\). A cross section is measured in the fiducial region defined by the muon transverse momentum \({p}_{T}^{\mu }>26\phantom{\rule{0.166667em}{0ex}}\text{Ge}\phantom{\rule{0.333333em}{0ex}}\), muon pseudorapidity \(|{\eta }^{\mu }|<2.4\), and charm quark transverse momentum \({p}_{T}^{c}>5\phantom{\rule{0.166667em}{0ex}}\text{Ge}\phantom{\rule{0.333333em}{0ex}}\). The inclusive cross section for this kinematic range is \(\sigma \left(W+c\right)=1026±31\phantom{\rule{0.166667em}{0ex}}\text{(stat)}\begin{array}{c}+76\\ -72\end{array}\phantom{\rule{0.166667em}{0ex}}\text{(syst) pb}\). The cross section is also measured differentially as a function of the pseudorapidity of the muon from the \(W\) boson decay. Utah System of Higher Education; Utah Valley University; Beykent University; Erzincan Binali Yildirim University; Mimar Sinan Guzel Sanatlar University; Qatar Foundation (QF); Texas A&M University QatarNormalized double-differential cross sections for top quark pair ( \(t\overline{t}\) ) production are measured in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV with the CMS experiment at the LHC. The analyzed data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb⁻¹. The measurement is performed in the dilepton e\(^{±}\)μ\(^{∓}\) final state. The \(t\overline{t}\) cross section is determined as a function of various pairs of observables characterizing the kinematics of the top quark and \(t\overline{t}\) system. The data are compared to calculations using perturbative quantum chromodynamics at next-to-leading and approximate next-to-next-to-leading orders. They are also compared to predictions of Monte Carlo event generators that complement fixed-order computations with parton showers, hadronization, and multiple-parton interactions. Overall agreement is observed with the predictions, which is improved when the latest global sets of proton parton distribution functions are used. The inclusion of the measured \(t\overline{t}\) cross sections in a fit of parametrized parton distribution functions is shown to have significant impact on the gluon distribution.Item Measurement of t(t)over-bar normalised multi-differential cross sections in pp collisions at root s=13 TeV, and simultaneous determination of the strong coupling strength, top quark pole mass, and parton distribution functions(Springer, 2020) CMS Collaboration; Sinop University; Mimar Sinan Guzel Sanatlar University; Qatar Foundation (QF); Texas A&M University Qatar; University of HyderabadNormalised multi-differential cross sections for top quark pair ( \(\text{t}\overline{\text{t}}\) ) production are measured in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 \(\phantom{\rule{0.166667em}{0ex}}\text{TeV}\) using events containing two oppositely charged leptons. The analysed data were recorded with the CMS detector in 2016 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of \(35.9\phantom{\rule{0.166667em}{0ex}}{\text{fb}}^{-1}\). The double-differential \(\text{t}\overline{\text{t}}\) cross section is measured as a function of the kinematic properties of the top quark and of the \(\text{t}\overline{\text{t}}\) system at parton level in the full phase space. A triple-differential measurement is performed as a function of the invariant mass and rapidity of the \(\text{t}\overline{\text{t}}\) system and the multiplicity of additional jets at particle level. The data are compared to predictions of Monte Carlo event generators that complement next-to-leading-order (NLO) quantum chromodynamics (QCD) calculations with parton showers. Together with a fixed-order NLO QCD calculation, the triple-differential measurement is used to extract values of the strong coupling strength \({\alpha }_{S}\) and the top quark pole mass ( \({m}_{\text{t}}^{\text{pole}}\) ) using several sets of parton distribution functions (PDFs). The measurement of \({m}_{\text{t}}^{\text{pole}}\) exploits the sensitivity of the \(\text{t}\overline{\text{t}}\) invariant mass distribution to \({m}_{\text{t}}^{\text{pole}}\) near the production threshold. Furthermore, a simultaneous fit of the PDFs, \({\alpha }_{S}\), and \({m}_{\text{t}}^{\text{pole}}\) is performed at NLO, demonstrating that the new data have significant impact on the gluon PDF, and at the same time allow an accurate determination of \({\alpha }_{S}\) and \({m}_{\text{t}}^{\text{pole}}\). The values \({\alpha }_{S}\left({m}_{\text{Z}}\right)=0.1135{}_{-0.0017}^{+0.0021}\) and \({m}_{\text{t}}^{\text{pole}}=170.5±0.8\phantom{\rule{0.166667em}{0ex}}\text{GeV}\) are extracted, which account for experimental and theoretical uncertainties, the latter being estimated from NLO scale variations. Possible effects from Coulomb and soft-gluon resummation near the \(\text{t}\overline{\text{t}}\) production threshold are neglected in these parameter extractions. A rough estimate of these effects indicates an expected correction of \({m}_{\text{t}}^{\text{pole}}\) of the order of \(+1\phantom{\rule{0.166667em}{0ex}}\text{GeV}\), which can be regarded as additional theoretical uncertainty in the current \({m}_{\text{t}}^{\text{pole}}\) extraction.Item Measurement of the differential cross section and charge asymmetry for inclusive pp -> W-+/- + X production at root s=8 TeV(Springer, 2016) CMS Collaboration; University of Colorado Boulder; Cornell University; Fermi National Accelerator LaboratoryThe differential cross section and charge asymmetry for inclusive \(pp \to W^{±} + X \to \mu^{±} \nu + X\) production at \(\sqrt{s}\) = 8 TeV are measured as a function of muon pseudorapidity. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 18.8 fb⁻¹ recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC. These results provide important constraints on the parton distribution functions of the proton in the range of the Bjorken scaling variable x from 10\(^{-3}\) to 10\(^{-1}\).
