Around B.C., Philodemus moved from Greece to the area of Naples, where he spent the rest of his life2). Philodemus and Siro (Vergil's celebrated teacher) organized there an Epicurean school that attracted some of the most famous Romans of the day; some have assumed that Horace was one of them. Since Christian Jensen edited Philodemus* On Poems3) and Augusto Rostagni the Ars Poetica*), many scholars have followed their suggestion that Philodemus was race's mentor5). In this paper, however, I propose to show recent papyrological discoveries have left this hypothesis without support. In particular, inalienable possession nouns appear to contain an internal argument which must be coindexed with the possessor noun. In Romance languages the argument is a dative or accusative clitic. These languages contrast with English-type languages in the following ways: ( 1) the inherent possession noun contains no explicit possessor determiner but a definite article; (2) the clitic is obligatory; and (3) number morphology is under-specified. This study compares the acquisition of inalienable possession syntax in L2 Spanish in order to determine ultimate levels of attainment. Three experimental groups of different proficiency levels and one control group participated in a grammaticality judgment task. The projection problem, or poverty of the stimulus problem (Chomsky 1986, Flynn & O'Neill 1988, White 1989, etc.) concerns the question of why learners' knowledge seems to go beyond experience. To address this problem one must build an account for why certain features of the target grammar are easily or automatically acquired despite limited input and absent from explicit instruction. The developmental problem is the problem of how syntax develops over time: why some properties are acquired earlier, while others take more time (Hawkins 2001). In adult language learning, there are properties of the target grammar are not learned easily or well, despite being robustly represented in the input, and targeted for explicit instruction. In the child literature developmental issues are generally dealt in terms of cognitive and processing constraints on the child capacities. In SLA, developmental explanations vary. Specific cases of imperfect learning have led to questioning of the possibility of parameter resetting in adult SLA (Liceras 1998), and more recently, to questioning the role of the morphology in syntactic development (Epstein et a11996, Beck 1999).Item Hildegard of Bingen: The Teutonic Prophetess(Routledge, 2002) Tsakiropoulou-Summers, TatianaHildegard of Bingen was an exceptional woman, endowed with extraordinary powers, including a dynamic personality, determination, and confidence, which, despite her sickly body, sprang from the power of her spirit and her tremendous belief in God. She managed not only to survive the negative attitudes toward women in the Middle Ages but also to triumph (at least during her lifetime) over adverse social and religious forces.Item Sancho Panza and the Power of the Spoken Word in Don Quixote(UNC-CH Department of Romance Studies, 2003) Worden, WilliamItem Aproximación a la imagen del musulmán en la España medieval(Parnaseo, 2003-03-24) Corbalan, AnaEste artículo trata sobre la construcción de la imagen del musulmán como el ‘Otro’ en los textos literarios de la Edad Media española. Esta imagen era totalmente estereotipada y negativa y sirvió para incrementar la hegemonía cristiana y la creencia en la superioridad del cristianismo frente a las demás creencias religiosas. Al representar al musulmán de esta forma arquetípica, se logró justificar la expulsión de los grupos minoritarios de la Península.
