Item Digital Twin Comparison of Continuous Casting Software to Current Steel Processes(University of Alabama Libraries, 2024) Miller, Lauren Elizabeth; Monroe, Charles A.Continuous Casting is a standardized practice within the steel industry. In this study, Nucor Steel Tuscaloosa Inc.'s (Nucor) caster and High-Definition (HD) mold were modeled with varying geometrical complexities within MAGMASOFT® 6.0 (MAGMA) to not only produce an original digital twin, but to also highlight and test the capabilities of their new mold. Based on collected blueprints, diagrams, and collected material data, multiple 3D modeling softwares were employed in the initial assemblies of the digital twin and were later on simulated within MAGMASOFT. A digital twin was successfully produced after seven rounds of revision and produced temperature distribution values that resemble final data points produced by Nucor. The simulated temperature distributions were similar, but not at the intended initial and final temperatures read. The produced twin can be utilized for future defect prediction and overall lifespan of its components. Being one of the first of its kind being utilized within the continuous casting industry, these simulations are only the beginning for the Research and Development (R&D) within Nucor and its HD Mold applications.
