Item Subversiones Del Pasado: La "Nueva Mujer" En La Televisión Española Del Siglo XXI(University of Alabama Libraries, 2021) Honeycutt, Barbara Ann; Corbalán, Ana M; University of Alabama TuscaloosaThis dissertation explores how Stèphanie Genz's postfeminist Supergirl identity is implemented in four series that were produced within the last ten years in Spain. These cultural audiovisual representations, which can be termed historical fiction productions, are: Gran Hotel (2011-2013), La otra mirada (2018-2019), Las chicas del cable (2017-2020) and El tiempo entre costuras (2013-2014).In this globalized society, technology has become the center for how we distribute information and how we connect to one another. Some critics such as Mar Chicharro Merayo argue can that the genre discussed in this dissertation can be described as some sort of a reflection of a society at the time the series is produced. Throughout my dissertation, using a feminist theoretical framework, I argue that there is an obvious intention in telling herstory, a concept which Joan W. Scott describes as an alternate version of the past that focuses on the female experience. Genz's concept offers a critical look at postfeminist protagonists that subvert the patriarchal norm and cannot be defined by feminine and masculine stereotypes. Through these televisual programs, we can see an obvious intentionality behind these storylines to retell history from below. Furthermore, I demonstrate how these series focus on a perspective of the past in which the postfeminist Supergirl's identity represents a reflection of a female figure that allows the spectator to feel a connection with the protagonist. Finally, through both a televisual and discursive analysis, I demonstrate how these identities reclaim the Spanish woman from the first half of the 20th century, allowing a link between the past and the present.
