Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias; Utah System of Higher Education; Utah Valley University; Argonne National Laboratory; Erzincan Binali Yildirim University; Qatar Foundation (QF); Texas A&M University QatarThe angular distributions and the differential branching fraction of the decay \(B^{0} \to K^{*}(893)^{0}\mu^{+}\mu^{-}\) are studied using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.5 fb⁻¹ collected with the CMS detector at the LHC in pp collisions at \(\sqrt{s}\) = 8 TeV. From 1430 signal decays, the forward-backward asymmetry of the muons, the \(K^{*}(892)^{0}\) longitudinal polarization fraction, and the differential branching fraction are determined as a function of the dimuon invariant mass squared. The measurements are among the most precise to date and are in good agreement with standard model predictions.Item Angular analysis of the decay B⁺ → K*(892)⁺μ⁺ μ⁻ in proton-proton collisions at √s = 8 TeV(2021) CMS Collaboration; Buccilli, A.; Charaf, O.; Cooper, S.I.; Di Croce, D.; Gleyzer, S.V.; Henderson, C.; Perez, C.U.; Rumerio, P.; West, C.; University of Alabama TuscaloosaAngular distributions of the decay B\(^{+}\) → K*(892)\(^{+}\) μ\(^{+}\) μ\(^{−}\) are studied using events collected with the CMS detector in \(\sqrt{s}\)=8TeV proton-proton collisions at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.0 fb⁻¹. The forward-backward asymmetry of the muons and the longitudinal polarization of the K*(892)\(^{+}\) meson are determined as a function of the square of the dimuon invariant mass. The integrated luminosity of the dataset collected with the CMS detector at the LHC corresponds to 19.7fb⁻¹. These measurements provide comprehensive information about the Z boson production mechanisms, and are compared to the QCD predictions at leading order, next-to-leading order, and next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbation theory.Item Azimuthal decorrelation of jets widely separated in rapidity in pp collisions at √s = 7 TeV(2016) CMS Collaboration; Charaf, O.; Cooper, S.I.; Henderson, C.; Rumerio, P.; University of Alabama TuscaloosaThe decorrelation in the azimuthal angle between the most forward and the most backward jets (Mueller-Navelet jets) is measured in data collected in pp collisions with the CMS detector at the LHC at \(\sqrt{s}\)=7TeV. The measurement is presented in the form of distributions of azimuthal-angle differences, Δϕ, between the Mueller-Navelet jets, the average cosines of (π − Δϕ), 2( π − Δϕ), and 3(π − Δϕ), and ratios of these cosines. The jets are required to have transverse momenta, \(p_{T}\), in excess of 35 GeV and rapidities, |y|, of less than 4.7. The results are presented as a function of the rapidity separation, Δy, between the Mueller-Navelet jets, reaching Δy up to 9.4 for the first time. The results are compared to predictions of various Monte Carlo event generators and to analytical predictions based on the DGLAP and BFKL parton evolution schemes.Item Coherent J/psi photoproduction in ultra-peripheral PbPb collisions at root s(NN)=2.76 TeV with the CMS experiment(Elsevier, 2017) CMS Collaboration; Erzincan Binali Yildirim University; Mimar Sinan Guzel Sanatlar University; Qatar Foundation (QF); Texas A&M University QatarThe cross section for coherent J/ψ photoproduction accompanied by at least one neutron on one side of the interaction point and no neutron activity on the other side, \(X_{n}0_{n}\), is measured with the CMS experiment in ultra-peripheral PbPb collisions at \(\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}\)=2.76TeV. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 159 μb\(^{−1}\), collected during the 2011 PbPb run. The \(J/ψ\) mesons are reconstructed in the dimuon decay channel, while neutrons are detected using zero degree calorimeters. The measured cross section is \(dσ_{{{X}_{n}}{{0}_{n}}}^{coh}/dy(J/ψ)\) = 0.36 ± 0.04 (stat) ± 0.04 (syst) mb in the rapidity interval 1.8 < |y| < 2.3. Using a model for the relative rate of coherent photoproduction processes, this \(X_{n}0_{n}\) measurement gives a total coherent photoproduction cross section of \(dσ^{coh}/dy(J/ψ)\) = 1.82 ± 0.22 (stat) ± 0.20 (syst) ± 0.19 (theo) mb. The data strongly disfavor the impulse approximation model prediction, indicating that nuclear effects are needed to describe coherent \(J/ψ\) photoproduction in \(γ\)+Pb interactions. The data are found to be consistent with the leading twist approximation, which includes nuclear gluon shadowing.Item Combinations of single-top-quark production cross-section measurements and |f_LV V_tb| determinations at √s = 7 and 8 TeV with the ATLAS and CMS experiments(2019) CMS Collaboration; Buccilli, A.; Charaf, O.; Cooper, S.I.; Henderson, C.; Rumerio, P.; West, C.; University of Alabama TuscaloosaThis paper presents the combinations of single-top-quark production cross-section measurements by the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations, using data from LHC proton-proton collisions at \(\sqrt{s}\) = 7 and 8 TeV corresponding to integrated luminosities of 1.17 to 5.1 fb⁻¹ at \(\sqrt{s}\) = 7 TeV and 12.2 to 20.3 fb⁻¹ at \(\sqrt{s}\)=8TeV. These combinations are performed per centre-of-mass energy and for each production mode: \(t\)-channel, \(tW\), and \(s\)-channel. The combined \(t\)-channel cross-sections are 67.5 ± 5.7 pb and 87.7 ± 5.8 pb at \(\sqrt{s}\) = 7 and 8 TeV respectively. The combined \(tW\) cross-sections are 16.3 ± 4.1 pb and 23.1 ± 3.6 pb at \(\sqrt{s}\) = 7 and 8 TeV respectively. For the \(s\)-channel cross-section, the combination yields 4.9 ± 1.4 pb at \(\sqrt{s}\)=8TeV. The square of the magnitude of the CKM matrix element \(V_{tb}\) multiplied by a form factor f LV is determined for each production mode and centre-of-mass energy, using the ratio of the measured cross-section to its theoretical prediction. It is assumed that the top-quark-related CKM matrix elements obey the relation \(|V_{td}|,|V_{ts}| ≪ |V_{tb}|\). All the \(|f_{LV}V_{tb}|^2\) determinations, extracted from individual ratios at \(\sqrt{s}\) = 7 and 8 TeV, are combined, resulting in \(|f_{LV}V_{tb}|\) = 1.02 ± 0.04 (meas.) ± 0.02 (theo.). Argonne National Laboratory; Erzincan Binali Yildirim University; Mimar Sinan Guzel Sanatlar University; Qatar Foundation (QF); Texas A&M University QatarA search for anomalous pseudoscalar couplings of the Higgs boson H to electroweak vector bosons V (\(=W\) or Z) in a sample of proton–proton collision events corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 18.9 fb\({-1}\) at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV is presented. Events consistent with the topology of associated \(VH\) production, where the Higgs boson decays to a pair of bottom quarks and the vector boson decays leptonically, are analyzed. The consistency of data with a potential pseudoscalar contribution to the \(HVV\) interaction, expressed by the effective pseudoscalar cross section fractions \({f}_{{a}_{3}}\), is assessed by means of profile likelihood scans. Results are given for the \(VH\) channels alone and for a combined analysis of the \(VH\) and previously published \(H\to VV\) channels. Under certain assumptions, \({f}_{{a}_{3}}^{ZZ}>0.0034\) is excluded at 95% confidence level in the combination. Scenarios in which these assumptions are relaxed are also considered.Item Comparison of the Z/γ* + jets to γ + jets cross sections in pp collisions at √s = 8 TeV(2015) CMS Collaboration; Charaf, O.; Cooper, S.I.; Henderson, C.; Rumerio, P.; University of Alabama TuscaloosaA comparison of the differential cross sections for the processes Z/γ * + jets and photon ( γ )+jets is presented. The measurements are based on data collected with the CMS detector at \(\sqrt{s}\)=8TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb⁻¹. The differential cross sections and their ratios are presented as functions of \(p_T\). The measurements are also shown as functions of the jet multiplicity. Differential cross sections are obtained as functions of the ratio of the Z/γ* \(p_T\) to the sum of all jet transverse momenta and of the ratio of the Z/γ* \(p_T\) to the leading jet transverse momentum. Mimar Sinan Guzel Sanatlar University; Ozyegin University; Marmara University; Kafkas University; Yildiz Technical University; University of Southampton; Argonne National LaboratoryThe inclusive jet cross section for proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV was measured by the CMS Collaboration at the LHC with data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 fb⁻¹. The measurement covers a phase space up to 2 TeV in jet transverse momentum and 2.5 in absolute jet rapidity. The statistical precision of these data leads to stringent constraints on the parton distribution functions of the proton. The data provide important input for the gluon density at high fractions of the proton momentum and for the strong coupling constant at large energy scales. Using predictions from perturbative quantum chromodynamics at next-to-leading order, complemented with electroweak corrections, the constraining power of these data is investigated and the strong coupling constant at the Z boson mass \(M_{Z}\) is determined to be \(\alpha_{S}(M_{Z})\) = 0.1185 ± 0.0019 (exp)\(_{-0.0037}^{+0.0060}\) (theo), which is in agreement with the world average.Item Constraints on the Higgs boson width from off-shell production and decay to Z-boson pairs(Elsevier, 2014) CMS Collaboration; Qatar Foundation (QF); Texas A&M University QatarConstraints are presented on the total width of the recently discovered Higgs boson, \(\Gamma_H\), using its relative on-shell and off-shell production and decay rates to a pair of Z bosons, where one Z boson decays to an electron or muon pair, and the other to an electron, muon, or neutrino pair. The analysis is based on the data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2011 and 2012, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 5.1 fb⁻¹ at a center-of-mass energy \(\sqrt{s}\) = 7 TeV and 19.7 fb⁻¹ at \(\sqrt{s}\) = 8 TeV. A simultaneous maximum likelihood fit to the measured kinematic distributions near the resonance peak and above the Z-boson pair production threshold leads to an upper limit on the Higgs boson width of \(\Gamma_H\) < 22 MeV at a 95% confidence level, which is 5.4 times the expected value in the standard model at the measured mass of \(m_H\) = 125.6 GeV.Item Constraints on the pMSSM, AMSB model and on other models from the search for long-lived charged particles in proton-proton collisions at root s=8TeV(Springer, 2015) CMS Collaboration; University of Southampton; Argonne National Laboratory; Erzincan Binali Yildirim University; Qatar Foundation (QF); Texas A&M University QatarStringent limits are set on the long-lived lepton-like sector of the phenomenological minimal supersymmetric standard model (pMSSM) and the anomaly-mediated supersymmetry breaking (AMSB) model. The limits are derived from the results presented in a recent search for long-lived charged particles in proton-proton collisions, based on data collected by the CMS detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider. In the pMSSM parameter sub-space considered, 95.9 % of the points predicting charginos with a lifetime of at least 10 ns are excluded. These constraints on the pMSSM are the first obtained at the LHC. Charginos with a lifetime greater than 100 ns and masses up to about 800 GeV in the AMSB model are also excluded. The method described can also be used to set constraints on other models.Item Correlations between jets and charged particles in PbPb and pp collisions at √s_NN = 2.76 TeV(2016) CMS Collaboration; Charaf, O.; Cooper, S.I.; Henderson, C.; Rumerio, P.; University of Alabama TuscaloosaThe quark-gluon plasma is studied via medium-induced changes to correlations between jets and charged particles in PbPb collisions compared to pp reference data. This analysis uses data sets from PbPb and pp collisions with integrated luminosities of 166 μb\(^{−1}\) and 5.3 pb\(^{−1}\), respectively, collected at \(\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}\) = 2.76 TeV. The angular distributions of charged particles are studied as a function of relative pseudorapidity (Δη) and relative azimuthal angle (Δϕ) with respect to reconstructed jet directions. Charged particles are correlated with all jets with transverse momentum ( \(p_{T}\) ) above 120 GeV, and with the leading and subleading jets (the highest and second-highest in \(p_{T}\), respectively) in a selection of back-to-back dijet events. Modifications in PbPb data relative to pp reference data are characterized as a function of PbPb collision centrality and charged particle \(p_{T}\). A centrality-dependent excess of low- \(p_{T}\) particles is present for all jets studied, and is most pronounced in the most central events. This excess of low- \(p_{T}\) particles follows a Gaussian-like distribution around the jet axis, and extends to large relative angles of Δη ≈ 1 and Δϕ ≈ 1.Item Decomposing transverse momentum balance contributions for quenched jets in PbPb collisions at √s_NN = 2.76 TeV(2016) CMS Collaboration; Charaf, O.; Cooper, S.I.; Henderson, C.; Rumerio, P.; University of Alabama TuscaloosaInteractions between jets and the quark-gluon plasma produced in heavy ion collisions are studied via the angular distributions of summed charged-particle transverse momenta ( \(p_{T}\) ) with respect to both the leading and subleading jet axes in high- \(p_{T}\) dijet events. The contributions of charged particles in different momentum ranges to the overall event \(p_{T}\) balance are decomposed into short-range jet peaks and a long-range azimuthal asymmetry in charged-particle \(p_{T}\). The results for PbPb collisions are compared to those in pp collisions using data collected in 2011 and 2013, at collision energy \(\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}\)=2.76TeVwith integrated luminosities of 166 μb\(^{−1}\) and 5.3 pb\(^{−1}\), respectively, by the CMS experiment at the LHC. Measurements are presented as functions of PbPb collision centrality, charged-particle \(p_{T}\), relative azimuth, and radial distance from the jet axis for balanced and unbalanced dijets.Item Determination of the top-quark pole mass and strong coupling constant from the t(t)over-bar production cross section in pp collisions at root s=7 TeV(Elsevier, 2014) CMS Collaboration; Yildiz Technical University; Qatar Foundation (QF); Texas A&M University QatarThe inclusive cross section for top-quark pair production measured by the CMS experiment in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV is compared to the QCD prediction at next-to-next-to-leading order with various parton distribution functions to determine the top-quark pole mass, \(m_t^{pole}\), or the strong coupling constant, \(\alpha_S\). With the parton distribution function set NNPDF2.3, a pole mass of \(176.7_{-3.4}{+3.8}\) GeV is obtained when constraining \(\alpha_S\) at the scale of the Z boson mass, mZ, to the current world average. Alternatively, by constraining \(m_t^{pole}\) to the latest average from direct mass measurements, a value of \(\alpha_S(m_z) = 0.1151_{-0.0032}^{+0.0033}\) is extracted. Texas A&M University QatarThis paper presents new sets of parameters (“tunes”) for the underlying-event model of the \(HERWIG\phantom{\rule{0.166667em}{0ex}}7\) event generator. These parameters control the description of multiple-parton interactions (MPI) and colour reconnection in \(HERWIG\phantom{\rule{0.166667em}{0ex}}7\), and are obtained from a fit to minimum-bias data collected by the CMS experiment at \(\sqrt{s}=0.9\), 7, and \(13\phantom{\rule{0.166667em}{0ex}}\text{Te}\phantom{\rule{0.333333em}{0ex}}\). The tunes are based on the NNPDF 3.1 next-to-next-to-leading-order parton distribution function (PDF) set for the parton shower, and either a leading-order or next-to-next-to-leading-order PDF set for the simulation of MPI and the beam remnants. Predictions utilizing the tunes are produced for event shape observables in electron-positron collisions, and for minimum-bias, inclusive jet, top quark pair, and Z and W boson events in proton-proton collisions, and are compared with data. Texas A&M University QatarMeasurements are reported of differential cross sections for the production of a W boson, which decays into a muon and a neutrino, in association with jets, as a function of several variables, including the transverse momenta ( \(p_T\) ) and pseudorapidities of the four leading jets, the scalar sum of jet transverse momenta ( HT ), and the difference in azimuthal angle between the directions of each jet and the muon. The data sample of pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV was collected with the CMS detector at the LHC and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 fb⁻¹. The measured cross sections are compared to predictions from Monte Carlo generators, MadGraph + pythia and sherpa, and to next-to-leading-order calculations from BlackHat + sherpa. The differential cross sections are found to be in agreement with the predictions, apart from the \(p_T\) distributions of the leading jets at high \(p_T\) values, the distributions of the HT at high- HT and low jet multiplicity, and the distribution of the difference in azimuthal angle between the leading jet and the muon at low values.Item Distributions of topological observables in inclusive three- and four-jet events in pp collisions at root s=7 TeV(Springer, 2015) CMS Collaboration; The distributions are corrected for detector effects, and compared with several event generators based on two- and multi-parton matrix elements at leading order.
