The analysis is based on data collected with the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of \(20.5\text{}\text{}{\mathrm{fb}}^{-1}\). The forward-backward asymmetry \({A}_{\mathrm{FB}}\) of the dimuon system and the contribution \({F}_{H}\) from the pseudoscalar, scalar, and tensor amplitudes to the decay width are measured as a function of the dimuon mass squared. The measurements are consistent with the standard model expectations.Item Angular analysis of the decay B⁺ → K*(892)⁺μ⁺ μ⁻ in proton-proton collisions at √s = 8 TeV(2021) CMS Collaboration; Buccilli, A.; Charaf, O.; Cooper, S.I.; Di Croce, D.; Gleyzer, S.V.; Henderson, C.; Perez, C.U.; Rumerio, P.; West, C.; University of Alabama TuscaloosaAngular distributions of the decay B\(^{+}\) → K*(892)\(^{+}\) μ\(^{+}\) μ\(^{−}\) are studied using events collected with the CMS detector in \(\sqrt{s}\)=8TeV proton-proton collisions at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.0 fb⁻¹. The forward-backward asymmetry of the muons and the longitudinal polarization of the K*(892)\(^{+}\) meson are determined as a function of the square of the dimuon invariant mass. These are the first results from this exclusive decay mode and are in agreement with a standard model prediction.Item Azimuthal correlations for inclusive 2-jet, 3-jet, and 4-jet events in pp collisions at root s=13 TeV(Springer, 2018) CMS Collaboration; For 3- and 4-jet scenarios, measurements of the minimum azimuthal angles between any two of the three or four leading \({p}_{T}\) jets are also presented. The analysis is based on data from proton–proton collisions collected by the CMS Collaboration at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 \(\phantom{\rule{0.166667em}{0ex}}\text{Te}\phantom{\rule{0.333333em}{0ex}}\), corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 \(\phantom{\rule{0.166667em}{0ex}}{\text{fb}}^{-1}\). Calculations based on leading-order matrix elements supplemented with parton showering and hadronization do not fully describe the data, so next-to-leading-order calculations matched with parton shower and hadronization models are needed to better describe the measured distributions. Furthermore, we show that azimuthal jet correlations are sensitive to details of the parton showering, hadronization, and multiparton interactions. A next-to-leading-order calculation matched with parton showers in the MC@NLO method, as implemented in herwig 7, gives a better overall description of the measurements than the powheg method.Item Azimuthal separation in nearly back-to-back jet topologies in inclusive 2-and 3-jet events in pp collisions at root s=13TeV(Springer, 2019) CMS Collaboration; The measurement considers events where the two leading jets are nearly collinear (“back-to-back”) in the transverse plane and is performed for several ranges of the leading jet transverse momentum. Proton-proton collision data collected with the CMS experiment at a center-of-mass energy of \(13\phantom{\rule{0.166667em}{0ex}}\text{Te}\phantom{\rule{0.333333em}{0ex}}\) and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of \(35.9\phantom{\rule{0.166667em}{0ex}}{\text{fb}}^{-1}\) are used. Predictions based on calculations using matrix elements at leading-order and next-to-leading-order accuracy in perturbative quantum chromodynamics supplemented with leading-log parton showers and hadronization are generally in agreement with the measurements. Discrepancies between the measurement and theoretical predictions are as large as 15%, mainly in the region \({177}^{\circ }<\Delta {\varphi }_{12}<{180}^{\circ }\). The 2- and 3-jet measurements are not simultaneously described by any of models.Item Bose-Einstein correlations in pp, pPb, and PbPb collisions at root s(NN)=0.9-7 TeV(American Physical Society, 2018) CMS Collaboration; Separate analyses are performed for same-sign unidentified charged particles as well as for same-sign pions and kaons identified via their energy loss in the silicon tracker. The characteristics of the one-, two-, and three-dimensional correlation functions are studied as functions of the pair average transverse momentum (\({k}_{T}\)) and the charged-particle multiplicity in the event. For all systems, the extracted correlation radii steadily increase with the event multiplicity, and decrease with increasing \({k}_{T}\). The radii are in the range 1–5 fm, the largest values corresponding to very high multiplicity \(p\mathrm{Pb}\) interactions and to peripheral PbPb collisions with multiplicities similar to those seen in \(p\mathrm{Pb}\) data. It is also observed that the dependencies of the radii on multiplicity and \({k}_{T}\) largely factorize. At the same multiplicity, the radii are relatively independent of the colliding system and center-of-mass energy.Item Bose-Einstein correlations of charged hadrons in proton-proton collisions at √s = 13 TeV(2020) CMS Collaboration; Buccilli, A.; Cooper, S.I.; Henderson, C.; Rumerio, P.; West, C.; University of Alabama TuscaloosaBose-Einstein correlations of charged hadrons are measured over a broad multiplicity range, from a few particles up to about 250 reconstructed charged hadrons in proton-proton collisions at \(\sqrt{s}\) = 13 TeV. The results are based on data collected using the CMS detector at the LHC during runs with a special low-pileup configuration. Three analysis techniques with different degrees of dependence on simulations are used to remove the non-Bose-Einstein background from the correlation functions. All three methods give consistent results. The measured lengths of homogeneity are studied as functions of particle multiplicity as well as average pair transverse momentum and mass. The results are compared with data from both CMS and ATLAS at \(\sqrt{s}\) = 7 TeV, as well as with theoretical predictions.Item Centrality and pseudorapidity dependence of the transverse energy density in pPb collisions ats root s(NN)=5.02 TeV(American Physical Society, 2019) CMS Collaboration; The huge angular acceptance exploits the fact that the CASTOR calorimeter at \(-6.6<\eta <-5.2\) is effectively present on both sides of the colliding system because of a switch in the proton-going and lead-going beam directions. This wide acceptance enables the study of correlations between well-separated angular regions and makes the measurement a particularly powerful test of event generators. For minimum bias \(p\text{Pb}\) collisions the maximum value of \(d{E}_{T}/d\eta \) is \(22\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\text{GeV}\), which implies an \({E}_{T}\) per participant nucleon pair comparable to that of peripheral PbPb collisions at \(\sqrt{{s}_{{}_{\mathrm{NN}}}}=2.76\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\text{TeV}\). The increase of \(d{E}_{T}/d\eta \) with centrality is much stronger for the lead-going side than for the proton-going side. The \(\eta \) dependence of \(d{E}_{T}/d\eta \) is sensitive to the \(\eta \) range in which the centrality variable is defined. Several modern generators are compared to these results but none is able to capture all aspects of the \(\eta \) and centrality dependence of the data and the correlations observed between different \(\eta \) regions.Item Charged-particle angular correlations in XeXe collisions at root s(NN)=5.44 TeV(American Physical Society, 2019) CMS Collaboration; The data were collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC with a total integrated luminosity of \(3.42\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\mu {\text{b}}^{-1}\). The collective motion of the system formed in the collision is parametrized by a Fourier expansion of the azimuthal particle density distribution. The azimuthal anisotropy coefficients \({v}_{2},{v}_{3}\), and \({v}_{4}\) are obtained by the scalar-product, two-particle correlation, and multiparticle correlation methods. Within a hydrodynamic picture, these methods have different sensitivities to noncollective and fluctuation effects. The dependence of the Fourier coefficients on the size of the colliding system is explored by comparing the xenon-xenon results with equivalent lead-lead data. Model calculations that include initial-state fluctuation effects are also compared to the experimental results. The observed angular correlations provide new constraints on the hydrodynamic description of heavy ion collisions.Item Charged-particle nuclear modification factors in XeXe collisions at √s_NN = 5.44 TeV(2018) CMS Collaboration; Buccilli, A.; Cooper, S.I.; Henderson, C.; Rumerio, P.; West, C.; University of Alabama TuscaloosaThe differential yields of charged particles having pseudorapidity within |η| < 1 are measured using xenon-xenon (XeXe) collisions at \(\sqrt{{s}_{NN}}=\phantom{\rule{0.25em}{0ex}}5.44\) TeV. The data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.42 μb\(^{−1}\), were collected in 2017 by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The yields are reported as functions of collision centrality and transverse momentum, \(p_T\), from 0.5 to 100 GeV. A previously reported \(p_{T}\) spectrum from proton-proton collisions at \(\sqrt{s}=5.02\) TeV is used for comparison after correcting for the difference in center-of-mass energy. The nuclear modification factors using this reference, \(R_{AA}^{*}\), are constructed and compared to previous measurements and theoretical predictions. In head-on collisions, the \(R_{AA}^{*}\) has a value of 0.17 in the \(p_{T}\) range of 6–8 GeV, but increases to approximately 0.7 at 100 GeV. Above ≈6 GeV, the XeXe data show a notably smaller suppression than previous results for lead-lead (PbPb) collisions at \(\sqrt{{s}_{NN}}=5.02\) TeV when compared at the same centrality (i.e., the same fraction of total cross section). However, the XeXe suppression is slightly greater than that for PbPb in events having a similar number of participating nucleons.Item Combination of CMS searches for heavy resonances decaying to pairs of bosons or leptons(Elsevier, 2019) CMS Collaboration; The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb\({-1}\) collected during 2016 by the CMS experiment at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data are found to be consistent with expectations from the standard model background. Exclusion limits are set in the context of models of spin-1 heavy vector triplets and of spin-2 bulk gravitons. For mass-degenerate W′ and Z′ resonances that predominantly couple to the standard model gauge bosons, the mass exclusion at 95% confidence level of heavy vector bosons is extended to 4.5 TeV as compared to 3.8 TeV determined from the best individual channel. This excluded mass increases to 5.0 TeV if the resonances couple predominantly to fermions.Item Combination of inclusive and differential tt¯ charge asymmetry measurements using ATLAS and CMS data at √s = 7 and 8 TeV(2018) CMS Collaboration; Buccilli, A.; Cooper, S.I.; Henderson, C.; Rumerio, P.; West, C.; University of Alabama TuscaloosaThis paper presents combinations of inclusive and differential measurements of the charge asymmetry (\(A_C\)) in top quark pair \(\left(t\overline{t}\right)\) events with a lepton+jets signature by the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations, using data from LHC proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. The data correspond to integrated luminosities of about 5 and 20 fb⁻¹ for each experiment, respectively. The resulting combined LHC measurements of the inclusive charge asymmetry are \(A_C^{LHC7}\) = 0.005 ± 0.007 (stat) ± 0.006(syst) at 7 TeV and \(A_C^{LHC8}\) = 0.0055 ± 0.0023 (stat) ± 0.0025 (syst) at 8 TeV. These values, as well as the combination of (\(A_C\)) measurements as a function of the invariant mass of the \(t\overline{t}\) system at 8 TeV, are consistent with the respective standard model predictions.Item Combination of searches for heavy resonances decaying to WW, WZ, ZZ, WH, and ZH boson pairs in proton-proton collisions at root s=8 and 13 TeV(Elsevier, 2017) CMS Collaboration; The data were taken at centre-of-mass energies of 8 and 13 TeV, corresponding to respective integrated luminosities of 19.7 and up to 2.7 fb⁻¹. The results are interpreted in the context of heavy vector triplet and singlet models that mimic properties of composite-Higgs models predicting W′ and Z′ bosons decaying to WZ, WW, WH, and ZH bosons. A model with a bulk graviton that decays into WW and ZZ is also considered. This is the first combined search for WW, WZ, WH, and ZH resonances and yields lower limits on masses at 95% confidence level for W′ and Z′ singlets at 2.3 TeV, and for a triplet at 2.4 TeV. The limits on the production cross section of a narrow bulk graviton resonance with the curvature scale of the warped extra dimension \(\tilde{k}\)=0.5, in the mass range of 0.6 to 4.0 TeV, are the most stringent published to date.Item Combination of Searches for Higgs Boson Pair Production in Proton-Proton Collisions at root s=13 TeV(American Physical Society, 2019) CMS Collaboration; The search is performed using data collected in 2016 by the CMS experiment from LHC proton-proton collisions at \(\sqrt{s}=13\text{}\text{}\mathrm{TeV}\), corresponding to an integrated luminosity of \(35.9\text{}\text{}{\mathrm{fb}}^{-1}\). Limits are set on the Higgs boson pair production cross section. A 95% confidence level observed (expected) upper limit on the nonresonant production cross section is set at 22.2 (12.8) times the standard model value. A search for narrow resonances decaying to Higgs boson pairs is also performed in the mass range 250–3000 GeV. No evidence for a signal is observed, and upper limits are set on the resonance production cross section.Item Combination of the W boson polarization measurements in top quark decays using ATLAS and CMS data at √s = 8 TeV(2020) CMS Collaboration; Buccilli, A.; Cooper, S.I.; Gleyzer, S.V.; Henderson, C.; Rumerio, P.; West, C.; University of Alabama TuscaloosaThe combination of measurements of the W boson polarization in top quark decays performed by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations is presented. The measurements are based on proton-proton collision data produced at the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV, and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 20 fb⁻¹ for each experiment. The measurements used events containing one lepton and having different jet multiplicities in the final state. The results are quoted as fractions of W bosons with longitudinal (\(F_0\)), left-handed (\(F_L\)), or right-handed (\(F_R\)) polarizations. The resulting combined measurements of the polarization fractions are \(F_0\) = 0.693 ± 0.014 and \(F_L\) = 0.315 ± 0.011. The fraction \(F_R\) is calculated from the unitarity constraint to be \(F_R\) = −0.008 ± 0.007. These results are in agreement with the standard model predictions at next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics and represent an improvement in precision of 25 (29)% for \(F_0\) (\(F_L\)) with respect to the most precise single measurement. A limit on anomalous right-handed vector (\(V_R\)), and left- and right-handed tensor (\(g_L\), \(g_R\)) tWb couplings is set while fixing all others to their standard model values. The allowed regions are [−0.11, 0.16] for \(V_R\), [−0.08, 0.05] for \(g_L\), and [−0.04, 0.02] for \(g_R\), at 95% confidence level. Limits on the corresponding Wilson coefficients are also derived.Item Combinations of single-top-quark production cross-section measurements and |f_LV V_tb| determinations at √s = 7 and 8 TeV with the ATLAS and CMS experiments(2019) CMS Collaboration; Buccilli, A.; Charaf, O.; Cooper, S.I.; Henderson, C.; Rumerio, P.; West, C.; University of Alabama TuscaloosaThis paper presents the combinations of single-top-quark production cross-section measurements by the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations, using data from LHC proton-proton collisions at \(\sqrt{s}\) = 7 and 8 TeV corresponding to integrated luminosities of 1.17 to 5.1 fb⁻¹ at \(\sqrt{s}\) = 7 TeV and 12.2 to 20.3 fb⁻¹ at \(\sqrt{s}\)=8TeV. These combinations are performed per centre-of-mass energy and for each production mode: \(t\)-channel, \(tW\), and \(s\)-channel. The combined \(t\)-channel cross-sections are 67.5 ± 5.7 pb and 87.7 ± 5.8 pb at \(\sqrt{s}\) = 7 and 8 TeV respectively. The combined \(tW\) cross-sections are 16.3 ± 4.1 pb and 23.1 ± 3.6 pb at \(\sqrt{s}\) = 7 and 8 TeV respectively. For the \(s\)-channel cross-section, the combination yields 4.9 ± 1.4 pb at \(\sqrt{s}\)=8TeV. The square of the magnitude of the CKM matrix element \(V_{tb}\) multiplied by a form factor f LV is determined for each production mode and centre-of-mass energy, using the ratio of the measured cross-section to its theoretical prediction. It is assumed that the top-quark-related CKM matrix elements obey the relation \(|V_{td}|,|V_{ts}| ≪ |V_{tb}|\). All the \(|f_{LV}V_{tb}|^2\) determinations, extracted from individual ratios at \(\sqrt{s}\) = 7 and 8 TeV, are combined, resulting in \(|f_{LV}V_{tb}|\) = 1.02 ± 0.04 (meas.) ± 0.02 (theo.). All combined measurements are consistent with their corresponding Standard Model predictions.Item Combined measurements of Higgs boson couplings in proton- proton collisions at v s=13TeV(Springer, 2019) CMS Collaboration; The analysis uses the LHC proton–proton collision data set recorded with the CMS detector in 2016 at \(\sqrt{s}=13\phantom{\rule{0.166667em}{0ex}}\text{Te}\phantom{\rule{0.333333em}{0ex}}\), corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 \(\phantom{\rule{0.166667em}{0ex}}{\text{fb}}^{-1}\). The combination is based on analyses targeting the five main Higgs boson production mechanisms (gluon fusion, vector boson fusion, and associated production with a \(W\) or \(Z\) boson, or a top quark-antiquark pair) and the following decay modes: \(H\to \gamma \gamma \), \(ZZ\), \(WW\), \(\tau \tau \), \(bb\), and \(\mu \mu \). Searches for invisible Higgs boson decays are also considered. The best-fit ratio of the signal yield to the standard model expectation is measured to be \(\mu =1.17±0.10\), assuming a Higgs boson mass of \(125.09\phantom{\rule{0.166667em}{0ex}}\text{Ge}\phantom{\rule{0.333333em}{0ex}}\). Additional results are given for various assumptions on the scaling behavior of the production and decay modes, including generic parametrizations based on ratios of cross sections and branching fractions or couplings. The results are compatible with the standard model predictions in all parametrizations considered. In addition, constraints are placed on various two Higgs doublet models.Item Combined search for electroweak production of charginos and neutralinos in proton-proton collisions at √s = 13 TeV(2018) CMS Collaboration; Buccilli, A.; Cooper, S.I.; Henderson, C.; Rumerio, P.; West, C.; University of Alabama TuscaloosaA statistical combination of several searches for the electroweak production of charginos and neutralinos is presented. All searches use proton-proton collision data at \(\sqrt{s}=13\) TeV, recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC in 2016 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb⁻¹. In addition to the combination of previous searches, a targeted analysis requiring three or more charged leptons (electrons or muons) is presented, focusing on the challenging scenario in which the difference in mass between the two least massive neutralinos is approximately equal to the mass of the Z boson. The results are interpreted in simplified models of chargino-neutralino or neutralino pair production. For chargino-neutralino production, in the case when the lightest neutralino is massless, the combination yields an observed (expected) limit at the 95% confidence level on the chargino mass of up to 650 (570) GeV, improving upon the individual analysis limits by up to 40 GeV. If the mass difference between the two least massive neutralinos is approximately equal to the mass of the Z boson in the chargino-neutralino model, the targeted search requiring three or more leptons obtains observed and expected exclusion limits of around 225 GeV on the second neutralino mass and 125 GeV on the lightest neutralino mass, improving the observed limit by about 60 GeV in both masses compared to the previous CMS result. In the neutralino pair production model, the combined observed (expected) exclusion limit on the neutralino mass extends up to 650–750 (550–750) GeV, depending on the branching fraction assumed. This extends the observed exclusion achieved in the individual analyses by up to 200 GeV. The combined result additionally excludes some intermediate gaps in the mass coverage of the individual analyses.Item Combined search for supersymmetry with photons in proton-proton collisions at root s=13 TeV(Elsevier, 2020) CMS Collaboration; Qatar Foundation (QF); Texas A&M University Qatar; University of HyderabadA combination of four searches for new physics involving signatures with at least one photon and large missing transverse momentum, motivated by generalized models of gauge-mediated supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking, is presented. All searches make use of proton-proton collision data at \(\sqrt{s}=13\) TeV, which were recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC in 2016, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb\({-1}\). Signatures with at least one photon and large missing transverse momentum are categorized into events with two isolated photons, events with a lepton and a photon, events with additional jets, and events with at least one high-energy photon. No excess of events is observed beyond expectations from standard model processes, and limits are set in the context of gauge-mediated SUSY. Compared to the individual searches, the combination extends the sensitivity to gauge-mediated SUSY in both electroweak and strong production scenarios by up to 100 GeV in neutralino and chargino masses, and yields the first CMS result combining various SUSY searches in events with photons at \(\sqrt{s}=13\) TeV.Item Comparing transverse momentum balance of b jet pairs in pp and PbPb collisions at √s_NN = 5.02 TeV(2018) CMS Collaboration; Buccilli, A.; Cooper, S.I.; Henderson, C.; Rumerio, P.; West, C.; University of Alabama TuscaloosaThe transverse momentum balance of pairs of back-to-back b quark jets in PbPb and pp collisions recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC is reported. The center-of-mass energy in both collision systems is 5.02 TeV per nucleon pair. Compared to the pp collision baseline, b quark jets have a larger imbalance in the most central PbPb collisions, as expected from the jet quenching effect. The data are also compared to the corresponding measurement with inclusive dijets. In the most central collisions, the imbalance of b quark dijets is comparable to that of inclusive dijets.Item Constraining Gluon Distributions in Nuclei Using Dijets in Proton-Proton and Proton-Lead Collisions at root s(NN)=5.02 TeV(American Physical Society, 2018) CMS Collaboration; The data samples were collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC, at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV. A significant modification of the \(p\mathrm{Pb}\) spectra with respect to the \(pp\) spectra is observed in all \({p}_{T}^{\text{ave}}\) intervals investigated. The ratios of the \(p\mathrm{Pb}\) and \(pp\) distributions are compared to next-to-leading order perturbative quantum chromodynamics calculations with unbound nucleon and nuclear parton distribution functions (PDFs). These results give the first evidence that the gluon PDF at large Bjorken \(x\) in lead ions is strongly suppressed with respect to the PDF in unbound nucleons.
