This enabled the characteristics for these crashes to surface so that traffic safety professionals can determine their magnitude and optimize senior driver safety programs to place emphasis on the most important factors. In many cases the comparison led to conclusions that were expected, being well established over the years. A very important general finding that confirms studies done by CAPS personnel from well over a decade ago is that senior drivers are relatively risk averse compared to younger drivers. This will be noticed in virtually all of the IMPACT comparisons below: the older driver red bars will be higher in those categories that generally involve lower risk. Examples include lower speeds, avoidance of late night driving and bad weather, and many other categories that will be noticed as risk-avoidance. While these examples may be used by some statewide agencies (e.g., ALEA and ALDOT) to address potential problems that could either be fixed or mitigated by enforcement, they also have value in training of local agencies. This training should include instruction on creating a water buildup filter, and how to run the high crash (hotspot) locations for both mile posted and non-mileposted roadways. The next two sections contain example output display from four mileposted roadways and a statewide run for non-mileposted routes. A final section presents of map of the mileposted and non-mileposted example locations.Item CARE Weather-Fatality Relationship Update Applied to 2016 and 2018 Data(2019-06-25) Brown, David B.Item CARE Wet Pavement Interstate Hotspot Analysis(2019) Brown, David B.Wet Pavement Hotspots are determined to help law enforcement officers know where crashes are more likely to occur during and shortly after wet weather. This will enable them to prevent crashes by law enforcement presence, which tends to slow the traffic and make the drivers more attentive. It will also be useful to positions law enforcement as first responders to areas during heavy or extended rainfall that have had a history of more than expected wet pavement crashes.
